Sexual violence (also called sexual abuse, sexual assault, sexual harassment) is when a person forces, threatens or tricks you into doing something sexual.


It can involve people you know (partners, family members, friends, parents) as well as strangers.

Examples of sexual violence:


  • Forces you to have sex or do other sexual acts
  • Forces you to watch porn 
  • They send you unwanted nudes
  • Pressures you into taking ‘nudes’
  • They share your nudes (sometimes called “revenge porn”)
  • Touches you in ways you do not like
  • Makes you feel guilty if you don't have sex
  • Does sexual things with you on drugs or drinking (when you are not able to consent)
  • Sexual jokes that make you feel uncomfortable

Sexual assault referral centres (SARC) can give you support if you have experienced sexual violence.
